How do you plan on directing traffic to your affiliate partners? - if you are gearing your plans to email marketing, you should make sure that the plan you join allows affiliate email links to their site (especially with all the new laws regarding un-solicited commercial email (SPAM)
What types of products will be relevant to your user base? - If you have a site about male sports, you will likely not want to join an affiliate plan geared toward womens cloths. Don't automatically rule out a product relationship, just spend some time thinking about how realistic the relationship is.
