Choosing a Banner Exchange
|
What are Banner Exchanges?
In simplest terms, banner exchanges offer publishers the ability to use
banners to promote their site in exchange for displaying the banners of
other member sites. A cashless advertising opportunity. They seem to have
lost some of their luster in the last couple of years, but for the
bootstrapping entrepreneur they can not be ignored entirely.

Do I really want to user banners?
It has been widely published that banners just do not draw the clicks that
they may once have seen. Banners do draw some clicks and, possibly more
important, create a sense of brand for your website. We are not talking
about branding to the level of a large multi-national corporation though.

Is there a downside to a banner exchange?
There are two potential pitfalls with using banner exchanges for your site.
The first is that some users view sites that use banner exchanges as less than
"successful". There "may" be a bias amongst users who are familiar with
internet marketing, but I would suggest that the number of users who truly
take that perspective is miniscule when compared to the total market of
users on the internet. The second potential pitfall is that you then have to
take up space on your pages to show banners for other members of the exchange.
Similar to my previous thoughts on "bias" about banner exchanges, users could
possibly view your displaying of banner exchange links as less than "successful".
And again, I would argue that the number of users who truly know what banner
exchanges are is miniscule.
