What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is the key to your internet business's online identity. It is the
easy to understand "street address" for your website. It is the
address your customers use to load your site, and will likely help users find
information about your products and services on the search engines. Domain names allow
potential customers to type in a name to get to your website. So for example,
a user may type in http://www.geekbusiness.com, which in turn is translated to a numeric
Internet Protocol (IP) address such as 63.247.141.200, which in turn is used to
route the users request to your site. Your domain name will allow users to
find your web site without having to memorize the IP address that is used by
the network to route their traffic to your site. Obviously, it is far easier to
memorize GeekBusiness.com than 63.247.141.200 (domain names are also case
insensitive -- GeekBusiness.com takes you to the same place as geekBUSINESS.com)
