Term Definition/Description
Java A simple platform-independent object-oriented programming language used for writing applications that can be run both on the server and client.
Javascript A simple cross-platform, World-Wide Web scripting language. JavaScript currently runs in only three environments - as a server-side scripting language, as an embedded language in server-parsed HTML, and as an embedded language run in web browsers where it is the most important part of DHTML. Javascript is only casually related to Java, with many saying it more closely resembles C/C++.
 

 
MySql Open source database system available on both Linux and Windows hosts. Despite being available on Windows, MySql is more typically associated with Linux hosts.
Perl Practical Extraction and Report Language, a scripting language which makes use of the CGI standard to allow work to be done on the web server.
PHP PHP (recursive acronym for "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor") is a widely used Open Source general purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML.
Pop Under A "pop" in internet marketing terms is an advertisement that opens a new browser window or tab on the users computer. A popunder opens is a new browser screen that pops behind your current browser window (thus pop under). It is initiate via Javascript code loaded when the user views a page on the site. (aka popunder)
Pop Up A "pop" in internet marketing terms is an advertisement that opens a new browser window or tab on the users computer. A pop up opens a new browser screen that pops on top of your current browser window (thus popup). It is initiate via Javascript code loaded when the user views a page on the site. (aka popup)
PPC Pay per Click; a type of internet advertisement that costs the advertisement a certain dollar amount for each click. While PPC ads are most typically text ads, banner ads are available as PPC.
Reciprocal Link A link reciprocated among websites. For example, your website about recipes includes a link to an online grocery store site that in turn includes a link to your recipe site. Reciprocal links among sites with related content are used extensively on the internet to increase traffic amongst themselves (kind of a link partnership intended to help both websites)
Rich Media Rich media generally refers to Internet advertising or content that can include video, audio, fill-in forms, pull-down menus, and other files that are larger than traditional HTML and graphic banners.
RSS Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a lightweight XML format designed for sharing headlines and other Web content.
SERP An acronym representing Search Engine Results Position/Page. In SEO circles, the goal is getting the highest SERP possible.
Shared Hosting A web hosting service where a server is shared by multiple web hosting customers (i.e., websites). Shared hosting is often an inexpensive solution for smaller website.
SOAP "Simple Object Access Protocol" - SOAP is a lightweight protocol for exchange of information in a decentralized, distributed environment. It is an XML based protocol that consists of three parts: an envelope that defines a framework for describing what is in a message and how to process it, a set of encoding rules for expressing instances of application-defined datatypes, and a convention for representing remote procedure calls and responses.
Unique Visitors The total number of individual visitors who used one browser to view a website one time within a given time period. There is actually a decent amount of debate about what constitutes "unique". As a webmaster though, what you are really trying to get to is a measure of how many different users accessed your site in a given time period. (aka uniques)
VPS Virtual Private Server - a hosting solution that lies between shared hosting and a dedicated server. A server is physically divided in the file system to prevent users in other partitions from accessing your partition. CPU and Memory resources are logically partitioned in such a way as to guarantee that you will always get your requested minimum resources. If the server in total is under utilized, you can use memory and CPU resources up to the maximum available.
Webservice a standardized way of integrating Web-based applications using the XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI open standards over an IP based network (e.g., the Internet).
WSDL "Web Services Description Language" - an XML format for describing network services (webservices) as a set of endpoints operating on messages containing either document-oriented or procedure-oriented information. The operations and messages are described abstractly, and then bound to a concrete network protocol and message format to define an endpoint. Related concrete endpoints are combined into abstract endpoints (services)
XML eXtensible Markup Language. XML has become a widely used data format in the internet world. XML files are plain text file that use tagging standards to allow for use by diverse applications.
