Following are our current glossary entries for letters A through J.  These are terms that are important to geek business people trying to make money on the Internet

 

Advertising Network

A company that serves as a middleman in the fulfillment of advertisements on the Internet. Ad networks match advertisers looking to display banners, skyscrapers, pops, and other creatives with publishers that have ad space available. Ad networks make money by taking a cut of ad sales.  Ad networks serve the ads using ad management software.

 

Banners

A general term used to describe ad creatives displayed on websites. Typically this term is reserved for horizontally oriented creatives, with 468×60 being the one of the oldest standard size banners. 728×90 banners, more commonly known as leaderboards became popular as computer monitor resolutions sky rocketed in the 2000′s.

 

CPA

Cost per Action - a standard earning methodology used in affiliate marketing. A set amount is paid to an affiliate when an action is taken. For example, you may get a CPA of $1.00 for an email signup offer you run. In this example, for each person to submit a valid email address on the offer page you would earn $1.00.

 

CPC

Cost per click - a standard earning methodology used in affiliate marketing. A set amount is paid to an affiliate when a click is recorded through an affiliate link. For example, you may get a CPC of $0.05 for clicks through to an offer you are running. In this example, for each valid click through your affiliate link you would earn $0.05.

 

CPM

Acronym used to represent the “cost per thousand” impressions of an advertisement. While CPM’s typically represented costs for ad networks that paid per thousand impressions, the term CPM is used by affiliate marketers also; often in the context of  a comparison of earning between affiliate sales earnings and more traditional pay per impression advertising earnings.
